Contains oxalic acid which is tasty. Used against skin infections and rheumatism. As a cosmetic used as a skin care lotion.
CROWN DAISY (Chrysanthemum coronarium) Flowers end Feb-early June. Very common native plant. Strongly aromatic. Stems can be eaten as vegetables. Rich in fragrant oil, olio tanaceti, containing camphor. Flower heads used to kill internal parasites. Oil good for the skin and counters rheumatism.
GLASSWORT (Salicornia fructicosa) Native plant. Grows by the seaside. Flowers May to July.
HOTTENTOT FIG (Carpobrotus edulis) Vigorous creeping plant, forming dense matts. Native to S.Africa, naturalised and common on Cyprus coastline.
SPINELESS YUKKA (Yucca filamentosa) Naturalised tree native to South Eastern states of America. Grows naturally on sand dunes.
YELLOW FENNEL (Foeniculum vulgare) Cyprus native. Flowers March to May. Aromatic. Rich in fragrant oil, smelling of aniseed. Used to flavour soup and casaroles. Used in medicine as a tonic, antispasmodic, suppressing muscle spasms, digestive, expectorant, helps clear blocked airways, and a diuretic, helping to pass urine. It can also increase milk yield for new mothers.
ORANGE WATTLE (Acacia salinga) Native to Australia,a natural coloniser producing a large quantity of seeds, invasive in Cyprus. Drought tolerant. Grows in poor soil. Attracts wildlife.Its nectary glands secretes a sugary fluid which attracts ants who distribute its seeds. Fast growing with extensive root system, it can grow over a metre in first year, outshading other plants. Scource of tannins used to treat diarrhoea and dysentry, apllied to treat wounds.
PRICKLY SALTWORT (Noaea mucronata) Native. Found on sandy dunes. Flowers July-October.
YELLOW BEACH POPPY (Glaucium flavum) Common. Flowers Spring and Autumn. Drought and salt tolerant. Pollinated by insects.
MALLOW LEAVED BINDWEED (Convolvulus althaeoides) Common. Flowers March to May. Flowers have a sweet taste and used to ease constipation. Also cultivated in gardens, flowering through hedges.
